6 Injured in Hele-On Bus Accident on Mamalahoa Highway in Laupahoehoe, HI
Laupahoehoe, HI — September 30, 2025, at least six people were injured due to a Hele-on bus accident at around 5:00 a.m. along Mamalahoa Highway.
Initial statements from the Hawaii Police Department say that the accident took place along Highway 19 in the area of mile marker 25.
According to officials, a Hele-on bus going along the highway somehow lost control. This resulted in the bus overturning. Due to this, six people had to be taken to a hospital. Their injuries weren't confirmed.
Others involved were treated at the scene. No further information about the accident is available.

People sometimes think a vehicle only involving one vehicle is simple. But a transit bus accident can bring up some unique challenges. Investigations would have to cover things like maintenance records, video evidence from the bus, training and qualifications of the driver, and working conditions under which that driver is operating. If authorities had their hands full clearing the scene and assisting all the victims, some of that evidence could have been overlooked. That's why accidents like this sometimes need to be in the hands of more thorough independent investigators who can ensure nothing important slips through the cracks.
