Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

With a deadly car accident like this, it’s important to make sure time-sensitive, delicate evidence is secured as soon as possible. A lot of people think authorities handle all of that, but their priorities are usually in clearing the scene, assisting the victims, and directing traffic around the crash. In all of that chaos, important evidence could be missed.

Vehicle data, inspections for defects, roadway conditions, debris analysis, cellphone records, video evidence, GPS data, toxicology reports—these are all important pieces of the puzzle that can easily be missed if careful steps aren’t taken early on to investigate them. Having someone dedicated to securing and preserving evidence can be vital in making sure the full story is told. That’s especially true for the victims who are no longer here to give their side of the story. The earlier steps are taken, the more evidence families can bring to light to make sure nothing important goes overlooked.
