Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After serious crashes, the first answers often come quickly, but the most important ones usually take more time. Early reports can explain what happened at a basic level, yet they don’t always show how or why events unfolded the way they did. That’s why careful follow-up matters.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? When two vehicles collide, a full investigation should go far beyond a quick look at damage and final resting positions. The key question is whether investigators took time to map the scene, measure vehicle paths and study how each vehicle moved in the seconds before impact. That includes checking speeds, angles of travel and whether either driver made sudden maneuvers. Not all officers receive the same level of crash reconstruction training, and complex crashes can be missed if the investigation is rushed or limited by time and resources.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? Modern vehicles rely on many systems working together, and failures are not always obvious. A brake issue, steering problem or electronic malfunction could change how a driver reacts in a critical moment. The question here is whether both vehicles were inspected for hidden mechanical problems, not just visible damage. Without that step, an important contributing factor can go unnoticed.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? Cars now store detailed information about speed, braking, throttle use and seatbelt status. Phones and navigation systems can also show timing and movement. The issue is whether this data was preserved and reviewed before it was lost or overwritten. These records can confirm actions that no witness can clearly recall.
Crashes like this remind us that surface-level explanations rarely tell the full story. Careful investigation, mechanical review and data collection are how real answers are found, and those answers matter long after the scene is cleared.
Key takeaways:
- A quick report does not always equal a complete investigation.
- Vehicle problems can play a role even when damage looks straightforward.
- Electronic data often holds details that human memory cannot.
