One of my first thoughts after a serious accident is whether investigators are taking the necessary steps to uncover exactly what happened. Early reports indicate that a single vehicle was involved, but that doesn’t mean the cause of the crash is straightforward. Over 30 years of experience has taught me it’s important to address some key questions to know whether or not an accident is being handled properly.
The first question is whether authorities are dedicating the necessary time, expertise, and tools to their investigation. Single-vehicle crashes often require more than a surface-level examination to identify factors like road conditions, visibility issues, or other external hazards. Are experienced officers leading the investigation, and do they have access to the equipment needed to properly reconstruct the events? Without these resources, critical details may be overlooked or conclusions drawn prematurely, leaving unanswered questions for those affected.
Next, it’s vital to consider whether a vehicle defect played a role in the crash. Mechanical issues like brake failures, tire blowouts, or steering problems are often underexamined but can easily cause a driver to lose control. Additionally, defects in safety equipment—like seatbelts or airbags that fail to perform—can turn an otherwise survivable crash into a fatal one. These possibilities require a prompt and detailed forensic examination of the vehicle to ensure all evidence is preserved. It would surprise folks how rarely that makes it onto authorities’ to-do lists.
Finally, investigators must determine whether all electronic data related to the crash has been collected. The Ford F-150 is equipped with an Engine Control Module (ECM) that can provide critical insights, such as speed, braking, and steering inputs leading up to the crash. Combined with potential external sources like nearby surveillance or traffic cameras, this data can help paint a more complete picture of what occurred. Even cellphones are sometimes overlooked, or authorities fail to consider things like a phone’s GPS data. A lot of this information is time-sensitive, though, so if authorities are too slow, they might let something important slip through the cracks or get deleted.
Once all is said and done, authorities may be able to provide a clear picture of what went wrong here. However, I talk to people all the time who take these questions, ask the authorities about them, and find that authorities can’t deliver clear, satisfactory answers. In those situations, it’s usually best to have a second set of eyes look things over and uncover whatever it is authorities overlooked.
