James Muñoz Killed in Truck Accident in Walker County, TX
Walker County, TX — January 27, 2024, James Muñoz was fatally injured due to a commercial truck accident at around 2:30 a.m. on Highway 19.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the crash occurred just northeast of Huntsville near the intersection with Ellisor Road.

According to officials, 34-year-old James Muñoz was in a Hyundai Tucson going southbound along the highway, though it's said the Tucson was driving against traffic on the northbound lanes. While doing so, the Hyundai crossed paths and collided with a northbound tractor-trailer. Muñoz died as a result. There were no other reported injuries.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
I talk a lot about the importance of not jumping to conclusions after deadly wrecks. That's both out of respect to those affected by the crash and due to the reality that crashes can happen for uncommon reasons. Mechanical defects, medical conditions, poor road design—folks are generally willing to accept that deadly crashes aren't always something a driver can avoid. The same could prove true here, as well.
But with wrong-way collisions, it seems that willingness to be charitable to victims flies out the window. That's probably because, quite frankly, wrong-way collisions often involve drivers who were illegally over-served by bars. I've said as much on this blog countless times. But often doesn't mean always, and a prudent accident reconstructionist wouldn't overlook other possibilities just because some are more common. They'd put the work in and ensure the evidence could speak for itself.
Ultimately, this could all be a one-in-a-million, unavoidable crash, it could be a predictable crash that happened for the same reason many others like it did, or there could be common factors with unusual surrounding issues authorities aren't able to address on their own. It's not about guessing things right. It's about getting the facts and finding out what path forward is best for the victims and families.
