Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman

When I hear about a crash where a snowmobile collides with a semi-truck at a trail crossing, my first question is, “Did both the snowmobiler and truck driver have enough time and visibility to avoid the collision?” Many people assume that because snowmobiles operate on designated trails, crashes with road traffic are rare, but in my experience, these crossings can present serious risks if they aren’t designed and marked properly.

One of the first things investigators should determine is whether the crossing was clearly marked. Was there proper signage warning both parties of the intersection ahead? I’ve seen cases where poorly marked crossings led to confusion, with snowmobilers misjudging how much time they had to cross or truck drivers failing to anticipate a fast-moving snowmobile entering the roadway.

Another key factor is visibility. Snowmobiles are much smaller than other vehicles on the road, and if the truck driver was coming around a curve or dealing with poor weather conditions, they may not have seen the snowmobile until it was too late. Investigators should look at sightlines at the crossing, as well as whether trees, snowbanks or other obstacles may have blocked the view for either party.

Speed is also an important consideration. Snowmobiles can travel at high speeds, and even if the rider saw the truck, they may not have had enough time to stop. Investigators should determine whether the snowmobile was operating within posted speed limits for trail crossings and whether the truck was traveling at a safe speed for conditions.

At this stage, too little is known to determine exactly what led to this crash, but that’s why a full investigation is necessary. Looking at signage, visibilit, and the movements of both vehicles will be key to understanding how this wreck happened. The victim’s family deserves those answers.
