One of the challenges with single-vehicle wrecks is they’re not always seen as a high priority. I get calls all the time from folks who felt authorities didn’t answer their questions or that they were more focused on blaming someone than actually gathering evidence. That’s why it can be helpful to consider what efforts authorities are making to give a crash like this the attention it deserves.

First, are authorities dedicating the expertise and tools required to investigate the crash properly? Even things like road design, signage, or maintenance issues may have contributed to the crash, so an investigation that overlooks them would be insufficient. Additionally, guardrails are designed to prevent severe accidents, but sometimes there are issues with them that go unnoticed. Did that happen here?

Second, has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect, such as a tire failure or a steering issue, played a role? Additionally, failures in safety equipment like seatbelts or airbags might have worsened the outcome. A forensic vehicle inspection is crucial to explore these possibilities.

Lastly, preserving electronic data from a victim’s Engine Control Module (ECM) is essential. This data can provide insight into speed, braking, and steering inputs before the crash. A complete investigation ensures all factors are explored, giving clarity to those affected.

If authorities can provide satisfactory responses to these concerns, then it’s probably because they’re doing a good job with the investigations. Otherwise, if details aren’t adding up, and concerns aren’t being addressed, it may be a sign that the accident would be better off in the hands of independent investigators.
