Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After serious crashes like this, people often will focus solely on looking for someone to blame. A proper accident reconstruction, however, should be focused on getting the facts. What can take people by surprise is that authorities can't always do that on their own. If they lack the proper tools, don't have enough time, or their department sees crashes like this as a low priority, important details can slip through the cracks.
That's why it's generally helpful to follow up with the authorities early and often. If they can address all concerns and questions adequately, it's likely a sign they're doing good investigations. But if their efforts are coming up short and leaving doubts, that may be a sign that the crash needs to be in the hands of more thorough independent investigators.
