Jesus Mendoza Killed in Electrocution Accident on Couch Street in Houston, TX
Houston, TX -- June 21, 2022, Jesus Mendoza was killed at around 2:10 p.m. due to a work accident which involved electrocution.
Officials listed the incident as occurring at 6604 Couch Street, just off Burleson Street. Details from OSHA show that 31-year-old Jesus Mendoza was in a bucket lift preparing to do communication cable work. For reasons unclear, Jesus Mendoza was electrocuted by an "energized cable." Jesus Mendoza was pronounced deceased following transport to a hospital.

OSHA listed a section of their standards codes as a possible violation contributing to the accident. It basically holds employers accountable for determining the "existing characteristics and conditions of electric lines and equipment" before getting near or working on that equipment. Is failure to live up to that standard what led to this man's death? Was he relying on someone to ensure he could do his job safely, and that person or those people failed? Was the electricity supposed to be off on that line? Did the victim have proper equipment, experience, and supervision as needed?
At the end of the day, OSHA can offer summaries to the public of what they believe happened to a worker killed on the job. But if they aren't giving the families more information than that, they're likely not giving them the full story they deserve. Not only could there be someone responsible for the death of their loved one, but there could be other workers at risk of coming to similar harm.
