Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Obviously, there isn't enough information to say exactly what went wrong here. That's when folks tend to rely on the efforts of police to get to the bottom of things. Unfortunately, it often takes more than a police investigation to get the whole picture. That's why crashes are generally better off in the hands of independent accident reconstructionists.
Independent investigators bring a lot to the table, like advanced reconstruction techniques, access to cutting-edge technology for analyzing crash sites, and a broader capacity to assess vehicle malfunctions or failures. They dive deep, often uncovering nuances that initial reports may overlook.
Authorities, on the other hand, rarely see accident reconstruction as a priority. Even if an officer is skilled or experienced, they may not have access to the tools or time that more complex crashes require. This leads to situations where they leave investigations unfinished, and sometimes they even get the facts wrong because they had to fill in the blanks with their best guesses.
Maybe authorities here are plenty equipped to handle this investigation. It's just that experience taught me not to take that for granted.
