John Kyle Looney Killed in 18-wheeler Accident in Leon County, TX
Leon County, TX — October 4, 2023, John Looney sustained fatal injuries due to an 18-wheeler accident at around 5:34 a.m. along U.S. Highway 79.
Preliminary details from authorities indicate that the fatal crash occurred near the intersection of County Road 238.

Authorities said in their statements that the roads were wet at the time as 52-year-old John Looney was in a Chevy pickup going eastbound on U.S. 79. From oncoming lanes, it appears investigators believe an 18-wheeler was going too fast for conditions, and the trailer began to fishtail. This resulted in the 18-wheeler entering oncoming lanes where it collided with Looney's pickup.
Looney died as a result of the collision. It does not appear there were any other injuries. Authorities recommended there be a citation for the truck driver traveling at unsafe speeds, and they also mentioned the possibility that the trailer's tires were worn or defective. They did not give any further specifics about the factors leading up to the crash.
