When I learn about a serious motorcycle accident like the one reported on May 15th on West Loop 250, I immediately think of the three questions that must be answered in any crash investigation. These questions aren’t just procedural—they’re essential to understanding what really happened and why.
First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Reports state that the motorcycle was allegedly weaving between lanes before control was lost, but those descriptions alone don't paint a full picture. To understand how and why the incident unfolded, investigators must go beyond surface-level observations. That includes examining the crash scene in detail, speaking with potential witnesses, and conducting a proper accident reconstruction. It's worth noting that crash investigations involving motorcycles often present unique challenges due to the size of the vehicle and the potential for rider ejection, which can complicate determining the sequence of events. It’s also important to remember that not all departments have equal access to investigative resources or the time required to dig deeply into every factor that could have contributed to the crash.
Second, has anyone looked into whether a vehicle defect may have caused or contributed to the crash? Harley Davidson motorcycles, like all motor vehicles, are complex machines that depend on precise mechanical operation. Issues such as brake failure, steering instability, or tire defects could easily cause a rider to lose control—especially at high speeds or during lane changes. These possibilities need to be explored through a forensic examination of the motorcycle. Unfortunately, this step is often overlooked, particularly when there’s an assumption of operator error. Moreover, if the vehicle is quickly released or destroyed, valuable evidence that could reveal a defect is lost forever.
Lastly, has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? In modern vehicles, including many motorcycles, there can be valuable electronic data stored in onboard modules—sometimes called “black boxes”—which may capture information like speed, throttle position, and braking behavior in the moments before a crash. Additionally, any surveillance footage from nearby traffic cameras or businesses, as well as cell phone data, can help reconstruct what happened. This type of evidence is often fleeting and must be preserved early to be useful. When it’s not gathered, a key opportunity to understand the crash is lost.
Ultimately, addressing these three questions isn't just about ticking boxes. It's about ensuring that every possible explanation is considered and that no critical piece of evidence goes unexamined. For the sake of those affected, including the loved ones left behind, our community has a duty to demand complete answers to how and why a crash like this occurred.
