One thing authorities didn’t specify here is if the alleged intoxicated driver was intoxicated due to drugs or alcohol. Believe it or not, this can make a huge difference, since alcohol-related accidents often involve more than one wrongdoer. For example, if an intoxicated driver was unlawfully over-served by an alcohol provider, such as a bar, liquor store, or restaurant, that alcohol provider can potentially face criminal investigations, fines, suspended licenses, and liability for resulting injuries or deaths.

Too often, though, negligent alcohol provider slip through the cracks. Authorities can become so focused on an intoxicated driver’s actions that they forget to complete their investigations. At the end of the day, if multiple wrongdoers contributed to a family’s hardships, they all should answer for those actions. Maybe there was only one person here who ultimately needs to face consequences, but there should be evidence to clearly say that one way or the other.
