Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After any serious crash, it’s natural to wonder how something so devastating could have happened. While some accidents seem to defy easy explanation, others turn out to have been preventable, if only the right questions had been asked early on.
Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? When a truck crashes off the road and ends up overturned and on fire, there are usually more layers to the story than what’s first reported. Hopefully, investigators at the scene took time to document the layout thoroughly — using laser-based tools, if available — to understand how the vehicle left the roadway and whether there were signs of evasive action. The hour of the crash also raises questions about driver fatigue or impairment, and it’s worth asking whether those angles were fully examined. In rural counties, officers might be short on time or resources, but that makes a deep and careful review even more important.
Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? Modern pickups are complex machines, and not all failures leave clear clues behind. A sudden brake failure, locked steering or faulty throttle sensor could easily result in a crash like this, especially if the driver had little time to react. The fact that the truck caught fire adds urgency: burn damage can quickly destroy potential evidence. That’s why it's critical to conduct a full mechanical inspection early on, before the chance disappears for good.
Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? A 2014 Ford F-150 likely contains a trove of electronic information that could shed light on what went wrong. Data showing speed, brake use, throttle input or seatbelt status can all help build a clearer picture. If cell phone records or nearby surveillance footage exist, they may also show whether distraction or another factor played a role. Unfortunately, that kind of digging often doesn’t happen unless someone pushes for it.
Some crashes leave behind more questions than answers, but the right questions can still help uncover the truth. When the cause isn’t immediately clear, it’s all the more important to dig deeper, while the opportunity remains.
Key Takeaways:
- Serious crashes deserve detailed investigations, not quick conclusions.
- Vehicle fires can destroy clues, so inspections should happen fast.
- Electronic records often hold the key to understanding what really happened.
