Ellis County, TX — July 22, 2023, Lucila Abundis Torres was injured following a rollover car accident at around 9:42 a.m. along F.M. 667.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the crash happened near the intersection of F.M. 667 and Joe Road.

According to officials, 38-year-old Lucila Abundis Torres was a passenger in a Ford F-150 that was going northbound along F.M. 667. Authorities say it appears a ball bearing fell from the pickup’s steering column, and the vehicle lost control. It went off-road to the right before then veering left and overturning.
As a result of the crash, Torres had injuries said to be incapacitating. The driver and one other passenger were left in unclear conditions. Right now, additional details about the accident are unavailable.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
The cause of this apparent mechanical failure has yet to be publicly confirmed, but it’s a very serious issue that warrants attention. When it comes to mechanical failures leading to accidents, it’s usually the result of something like misuse or lack of maintenance. But could it be this was a completely unforeseeable catastrophic failure that only the vehicle manufacturer could have avoided? Could it be the vehicle was serviced recently at a shop? Do the authorities here have the right tools to investigate something so unusual?
It should go without saying this is far from your typical car wreck, so finding out what happened will likely require more than the typical accident reconstruction. It’s not clear right now if those steps are actually being taken.
