Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After any single-vehicle wreck, a reiterate the importance of looking into even unlikely possible factors the driver may not have been able to avoid. Brake failure, tire blowout, medical condition, manufacturing defect, poor road design or maintenance—common or not, the evidence needs to speak for itself.
Generally speaking, folks understand why that's important. But their willingness to reserve judgment often flies out the window once they see the victim is a teenager. Simply put, people tend to assume teenage drivers are always reckless and at fault for these kinds of accidents. Statistically, that is the likely explanation. But if we're willing to give the benefit of the doubt to someone after a single-vehicle wreck, their age shouldn't have bearing on that.
At the end of the day, someone lost their life, and their loved ones deserve to know they're getting the whole story. That can't happen if people are more concerned with being right than letting the evidence speak for itself.
