Maria Ramirez Federico Killed, 1 Injured in Car Accident near Amarillo, TX
Potter County, TX — February 20, 2025, Maria Ramirez Federico was killed following a car accident at approximately 7:00 a.m. along St. Francis Avenue.
According to authorities, 78-year-old Maria Federico was a passenger in a Kia Forte with a 62-year-old man at the St. Francis Avenue and Lakeside Drive intersection when the accident took place.

The cause of the accident remains unclear. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, a Chevrolet Silverado pickup truck allegedly failed to stop for a stop sign, entering the intersection at an apparently unsafe time. This resulted in a collision between the Silverado and the Forte.
Federico suffered reportedly fatal injuries over the course of the accident. The man who had been with her in the Forte sustained serious injuries, as well, according to reports. Authorities have recommended charges of disregarding a stop sign and criminally negligent homicide against the person who had been behind the wheel of the Silverado. Additional details pertaining to this incident are not available at this point in time. The investigation is currently ongoing.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I see reports like this, my main concern is whether Maria Federico’s loved ones—and those affected by the crash—will get the answers they need about what happened. A collision at an intersection where one vehicle allegedly failed to stop raises immediate concerns, but experience has shown me that these incidents often involve more than just driver error. That’s why it’s critical to examine three key questions when looking into any serious accident.
The first question is whether authorities have conducted a thorough investigation. Law enforcement will likely document the scene, but key details can sometimes be overlooked. Were there any visibility issues—such as obstructed stop signs, poor lighting, or sun glare—that may have played a role? Were there skid marks or other physical evidence suggesting whether the Silverado attempted to stop? Were officers able to collect witness statements or video footage to verify the sequence of events? Ensuring these questions are answered is crucial to understanding the full circumstances of the crash.
The second question to consider is whether anyone has looked into the possibility of a vehicle defect. If the Chevrolet Silverado experienced a mechanical failure—such as brake issues or a throttle malfunction—that prevented the driver from stopping in time, that could be a key factor in understanding the crash. Additionally, crashworthiness should be examined—did the Kia Forte’s safety systems, such as airbags and seatbelts, function as expected? Unfortunately, these factors are often overlooked unless someone specifically requests further investigation. A forensic analysis of both vehicles could help determine whether a defect played a role in the accident.
Finally, it’s important to determine whether all relevant electronic data has been collected. Both the Silverado and the Forte may have stored critical information in their engine control modules, including speed, braking, and steering inputs before impact. Additionally, surveillance footage from nearby businesses or traffic cameras may provide visual confirmation of how the collision occurred. Even cellphone data could be relevant if distraction played a role. Securing this evidence quickly is essential to preserving a full and accurate understanding of the accident.
At the end of the day, answering these questions could be essential to understanding what really happened and why. A thorough examination of all three of these issues—including the quality of police investigations, possible vehicle defects, and electronic data—is the least that can be done to ensure that those affected by the crash receive the clarity they deserve.
