Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Anytime a crash involves a commercial truck, it raises concerns that go beyond a typical car accident. These vehicles operate under unique rules and bring far more destructive potential, which means a surface-level investigation isn’t enough. To really understand what happened here, it’s important to focus on some key questions:
1. Was the crash fully reconstructed?
A thorough reconstruction should look at roadway markings, vehicle damage, and traffic patterns to explain how the two vehicles came together. Without that, it’s hard to know whether initial assumptions reflect the full picture.
2. Could vehicle defects have played a role?
Whether it’s electronics failures, brake issues, steering column defects, or other unexpected issues, factors beyond a driver’s control can lead to serious accidents. Checking both vehicles quickly is essential to catch potential defects before evidence is repaired or lost.
3. Has electronic evidence been secured?
Semi-trucks often carry electronic logging devices (ELDs) and onboard systems that record speed, braking, and driver hours of service. Passenger vehicles may also store crash data. Combined with phone records or traffic cameras, these sources can provide a much clearer timeline.
Without addressing these areas, victims and families are left with unanswered questions. Commercial truck crashes aren’t just about who hit who—they’re about understanding why it happened and whether something preventable was overlooked.
