Live Oak County, TX — November 12, 2023, Matthew Grondel was killed and one person was injured following a possible drunk driver accident on Highway 72.
Officials said in their public investigations that the incident happened around 6:26 a.m. near mile marker 506 of Highway 72.

According to investigators, 52-year-old Matthew Grondel was in a Nissan Rogue going westbound along the highway. From oncoming lanes, it appears a 19-year-old in a pickup went left of center and crashed into Grondel. Grondel died as a result.
The teen driver had apparently incapacitating injuries. Authorities allege the teen may have have been under the influence of alcohol when the crash occurred. This can’t be confirmed right now.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Obviously someone being drunk while underage is incredibly concerning (not to mention possibly driving drunk). If authorities find out alcohol was indeed involved here, there would likely be charges to follow. But that would also mean finding out where the driver got their alcohol. It could have just been an acquaintance, but there’s always the concerning possibility a local business sold alcohol to a teenager. Is that part of the continuing investigations here? Ultimately, all complicit parties here need to answer for their respective roles in this terrible event.
