Commentary
When a single-vehicle crash involves a serious injury, it's tempting to attribute the incident to driver error and move on. But in my experience, those assumptions often miss key facts. To understand what really happened, we must ask three essential questions: Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Has anyone considered whether a vehicle defect played a role? And has all the electronic data related to the crash been collected and preserved?
At 9:15 p.m., visibility may have been limited, and road conditions could have been a contributing factor. A proper investigation should assess whether there were hazards in the roadway, if the curve of the road played a role or if the shoulder was unsafe or poorly marked. These are critical environmental factors that could explain why the vehicle left the roadway and collided with a tree. Unfortunately, in single-vehicle crashes, especially in rural areas, these scene details are sometimes overlooked unless someone pushes for a thorough reconstruction.
Just as important is the question of whether a defect in the vehicle itself could have contributed. The 2019 Nissan 370Z is a performance-oriented vehicle, and while it offers a responsive driving experience, it also relies heavily on its mechanical and electronic systems to keep the vehicle stable and safe. A failure in the suspension, steering, brakes or electronic stability control system could easily cause a sudden loss of control. Without a careful inspection of the vehicle, those possibilities may never be uncovered. This is especially true if the vehicle is repaired or disposed of before anyone has a chance to examine it properly.
Finally, the engine control module in the 370Z likely captured crucial data in the seconds leading up to the crash: information such as speed, throttle input, braking activity and steering angle. This data can help determine whether the vehicle was behaving as expected and whether the driver attempted to avoid the crash. It can also highlight any anomalies that may point to mechanical issues. In addition to vehicle data, any available GPS logs, dashcam footage or nearby surveillance could provide context about the vehicle’s movement and environment before the crash.
When someone is seriously injured in a crash like this, it’s not enough to accept a simple explanation. A full, evidence-based investigation — one that examines the road, the vehicle and the digital data — is the only way to get the answers that matter. That process not only helps those directly affected but also improves our ability to recognize and prevent similar incidents in the future.
