Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
If these events happened the way the news says they did, it’s incredibly alarming to see an 18-wheeler driver begin a turn and then change their mind and switch things up before completing the turn. Any experienced truck driver will tell you that this is inherently dangerous. Responsible truckers know that it takes time to reposition a truck mid-maneuver, and the amount of time that takes and the right-of-ways that can impede simply aren’t worth the risk.
That’s why I have to wonder, if these statements are true, what was this driver thinking? In my experience handling hundreds of commercial vehicle accidents, if the news is highlighting such a serious possible mistake, it’s very likely that the official findings from a proper accident reconstruction will reveal even more severe problems behind the scenes. After all, a serious commercial vehicle wreck isn’t just about what happened; it’s about why it happened and whether or not it could have been avoided.
