The Bronx, NY — November 29, 2022, a 21-year-old motorcyclist died in a collision with a box truck on Broadway in the Bronx's North Riverdale neighborhood.

Authorities say the incident happened around 5:30 p.m. on southbound Broadway near West 262nd Street. Preliminary investigation suggests the victim was headed south on the roadway when a box truck started a U-turn in the roadway ahead. The motorcycle crashed with the truck and the rider was ejected; he was transported to an area hospital where he died a short time later.

Commentary on the Bronx Box Truck Accident on Broadway

A look at the area near Broadway and 262nd shows two traffic lanes headed either direction in a pretty dense urban environment--not really what most would consider a good place for a U-turn. Add that to the generally clumsy nature of a commercial truck turning around and it seems like a recipe for disaster in a well-trafficked area.

Most commercial truck drivers recognize how risky it is to obstruct traffic with a U-turn; in fact, many reputable companies penalize or even fire their drivers for trying it anywhere near traffic. It makes me wonder why the Bronx driver tried it at all, but since their decision caused fatal injuries most would think they and their employer would own up to the error and try to make things as right as possible.

Reasonable as that may seem, though, I've cautioned many people not to think things will resolve that easily.
