Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Multi-vehicle accidents like this can be complicated, and getting to the bottom of what really happened requires a thorough and careful investigation. Intersection crashes, in particular, can involve multiple factors, such as right-of-way, visibility, and driver actions in the moments leading up to the impact. If authorities don’t take the time to examine all the evidence, important details could be missed, leaving victims and families with more questions than answers.
Did investigators have the time, tools, and training to fully analyze the crash? Accidents at intersections require careful attention to traffic signals, sightlines, and vehicle positioning. Were road conditions, potential obstructions, and vehicle movements properly documented, or did investigators rely on assumptions rather than hard evidence?
Did they consider whether mechanical failures contributed to the crash? A trailer swinging into another vehicle raises questions about its loading, hitch stability, and braking function. Did investigators inspect the vehicles and trailer to determine if any defects or maintenance issues played a role in the crash?
Did they secure all available electronic evidence? The vehicles’ Engine Control Modules (ECMs) may contain key data on speed, braking, and steering inputs before the crash. Surveillance footage or dashcam recordings could also provide crucial context. Were steps taken to preserve this information before it was lost?
If authorities can provide clear answers, then it's probably because they did good investigations. If they can't, it's possible those involved in the accident will need for there to be secondary investigations to ensure nothing important slipped through the cracks.
