Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When multi-vehicle crashes like this occur, particularly those involving numerous 18-wheelers, it’s tempting to attribute the situation solely to road conditions or a single error by one driver. However, my experience in handling commercial vehicle accident cases has taught me that these events are often more complex, requiring a detailed investigation to uncover the full scope of contributing factors.
One of the key questions in a crash involving such a large number of vehicles is what initiated the chain of events. Was a truck driver traveling too fast for the snowy conditions, or did one of the trucks experience mechanical issues, such as brake failure? It’s also worth asking whether visibility or the actions of passenger vehicle drivers played a role. Accidents of this scale often reveal a combination of factors that together create a dangerous situation.
The trucks involved in this incident must also be closely inspected for compliance with safety regulations. Were their tires and brakes adequate for winter road conditions, and was each vehicle properly equipped with functioning lights and reflectors? Inadequate maintenance or defective equipment can turn routine driving conditions into a deadly hazard, particularly in inclement weather.
Beyond the vehicles themselves, the trucking companies behind them deserve careful scrutiny. Did they ensure their drivers were trained to operate safely in winter weather and prepared to respond appropriately in emergencies? Were company policies, such as delivery schedules, placing undue pressure on drivers to take risks or ignore road conditions? A company’s safety culture—or lack thereof—can be a critical factor in understanding why a driver’s judgment may falter in these situations.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
