Delaware County, OH — December 6, 2024, Patrick O’Neal and Nickolas Golden were injured following a truck accident at approximately 4:00 a.m. along Interstate 71.
According to authorities, the accident took place on the I.H. 71 southbound offramp in the vicinity of State Highway 37.
27-year-old Nickolas Golden, a Sheriff’s deputy for Delaware County, was on the scene assisting with a previous crash that had involved a Toyota Camry occupied by 64-year-old Patrick O’Neal. Reports state that the lights on the Sheriff’s cruiser were activated at the time. Officials indicate that, for as yet unknown reasons, an 18-wheeler failed to maintain control, colliding with the crash scene as a result. O’Neal and Golden each sustained serious injuries, according to reports; they were transported to local medical facilities by EMS in order to receive necessary treatment. When crashes like this occur, people often focus on the immediate circumstances, such as why a truck failed to maintain control. However, in my experience, accidents involving 18-wheelers at active crash scenes often point to deeper issues that require thorough investigation to uncover.
What caused the truck driver to lose control and collide with the crash scene? Was the driver distracted, fatigued, or driving too fast for the conditions? Trucks require significantly more time and space to stop than smaller vehicles, particularly in emergency situations. Investigators must carefully examine whether the driver was attentive and appropriately cautious as they approached the scene.
The trucking company’s role in this incident also deserves scrutiny. Companies are responsible for hiring qualified drivers, providing proper training, and ensuring their vehicles are safe and roadworthy. Did the company verify the driver’s fitness for duty, or were there signs of fatigue or lack of preparation that were overlooked? Was the truck itself in proper working order, with functional brakes, tires, and safety systems? If the company failed to meet these responsibilities, it could share liability for the crash.
