Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
People have a tendency to see someone charged for drunk driving and assume everything from there is open-and-shut. With a 19-year-old being the alleged drunk driver, though, a serious questions comes up: Where did the teen get their alcohol from? It could be that there's someone who needs to be held accountable for providing alcohol to someone underage and possibly contributing to a serious accident.
Particularly concerning is the possibility a local establishment sold the alcohol to the driver, either knowingly or due to sheer negligence. In my experience, when bars, restaurants, or stores let alcohol get into the hands of underage drinkers, there's a good chance that establishment is violating all kinds of rules. Letting those sorts of negligent establishments continue to operate without any sort of consequences only risks letting people get harmed in the future.
That's why it's important not to sweep these possibilities aside just because there's a driver that can take the blame. Victims and families deserve to know that all parties who contributed to the accident are going to face appropriate consequences. That's especially true if one of those wrongdoers could still be putting the community at risk.
