Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Regardless of what happened here, a serious crash is almost always better off in the hands of independent accident reconstructionists. I don't see why this crash would be an exception. Here's why I say that.
Folks see a two-vehicle crash involving ordinary cars, and they just assume things will be straight-forward. The problem is that when things aren't straight-forward, investigators who don't approach the crash with extensive experience and state-of-the-art tools are likely to miss something important. For example, something like a mechanical defect is far beyond the complexity of more common factors, like cell phone usage or speeding.
Frankly, authorities rarely prioritize accident reconstruction highly enough to give officers the kind of training and equipment dedicated independent accident reconstructionists have. That's why a lot of the people who call us are people who trusted authorities would give them a thorough, exhaustive accounting of details surrounding their accident only to be left with unanswered questions. Maybe authorities here were thorough enough to keep that from happening, but experience suggests it's not wise to leave that up to chance.
