Since details aren’t confirmed right now, it’s possible evidence will show alcohol wasn’t a factor here. If it was, though, that doesn’t necessarily make things open-and-shut like folks may think. Drunk driving accidents can involve unique challenges, especially at this time of day when there are often negligent alcohol providers who may have also played a role in the accident.

The issue, though, is these negligent alcohol providers tend to slip through the cracks. Despite the fact they can face criminal investigations, fines, and liability when their actions get people hurt, I encounter case after case where the only one looking to see the alcohol providers held accountable is us. Having worked with hundreds of families affected by drunk driving, people don’t want someone to blame. They want accountability. So if alcohol was a factor here, there need to be steps beyond just throwing the book at the driver and calling it a day. The evidence should be allowed to tell the whole story.
