Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When multiple people are hurt in a crash, it’s natural to want a clear explanation of how it happened—but that clarity depends on whether key questions were asked early on.
1. Did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash?
Did investigators take the time to reconstruct what happened before and after the lane change? Was there any physical evidence—like tire marks or vehicle positioning—that helped confirm how the crash unfolded?
2. Has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash?
If something in the Tesla’s lane-keeping system or sensors misfired, that could have caused the erratic movement. But without a proper inspection, it’s easy for those issues to be missed.
3. Has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected?
Between a Tesla and a Hyundai, there’s likely a wealth of electronic evidence available—vehicle speed, steering inputs, braking activity. That data often paints a clearer picture than witness memory alone.
Asking these questions early can mean the difference between an incomplete report and a real understanding of what happened. Either authorities can provide clear answers, or other avenues will have to be explored to get the complete picture.
Key Takeaways:
- Unsafe lane change crashes deserve close, detailed investigation.
- Tech failures—especially in modern vehicles—shouldn’t be ruled out without checking.
- Onboard data can provide hard answers when the story isn’t clear.
