Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After any serious car accident, things can be a lot more complex than folks may realize. Authorities are not always able or willing to gather clear evidence and point to an exact cause for a crash. In fact, I get calls all the time from people who were left looking for answers on their own because authorities felt they had more important things to work on.
In one case not long ago, for example, two drivers were both blaming each other for running a light. The investigating officer's supervisor pressured them to move on to other work, so the officer basically threw up his hands and said "Y'all figure it out." Once we were brought onto the case by one of the drivers, it took barely any time at all for us to find a nearby business whose security camera caught the whole crash on video and proved the other driver ran the light.
Maybe authorities here were more diligent than that. My point is simply that victims and families shouldn't take for granted that their situation is being handled properly. It's often prudent to follow up with authorities and find out if investigations are being taken seriously or if there needs to be a second set of eyes looking things over.
