Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
People often think car accidents are simple just because they're common. However, unless authorities take the time to consider the more subtle details that can surround a crash, they may overlook important details.
For example, in this crash, it appears only one person had any injuries—serious ones, at that. Do the events of the crash make that a reasonable outcome, or could it be something unusual, like a vehicle defect, contributed to the crash?
I recall a crash we handled not long ago where a driver's injuries were unusually severe given the relatively mild nature of the crash. More thorough independent inspections of the vehicle revealed something authorities missed. The victim's seatbelt was defective. Had it worked properly, they likely would have been okay.
I'm not saying that happened here, but it's something that can easily slip through the cracks if authorities fail to dedicate the time and tools it takes to do a proper crash investigation. That's why a lot of victims and families end up deciding they want an independent set of eyes looking things over so nothing important goes overlooked.
