Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I hear about a crash where a motorcycle collides head-on with a semi-truck while traveling the wrong way on an interstate, my first question is, “How did the motorcyclist end up going the wrong direction in the first place?” Many people assume wrong-way crashes happen because a driver was simply confused, but in my experience, these incidents often involve deeper issues that need careful investigation.
One of the first things investigators should determine is whether the motorcycle entered the highway in the wrong direction or if it somehow turned around after already being on the road. Were there clear and visible “Wrong Way” or “Do Not Enter” signs at the nearest ramps? I’ve seen cases where poorly marked or missing signage contributed to wrong-way crashes, particularly in areas with complicated highway exits.
Another key factor is whether road design or lighting conditions played a role. This crash happened at night, and visibility is always a concern on high-speed roadways. Investigators should examine whether the highway was well-lit and whether any recent roadwork or detours might have contributed to confusion about the correct direction of travel.
It’s also important to consider whether the motorcyclist’s vehicle was in good working order. Mechanical issues, such as brake failure or throttle malfunctions, could have played a role. Investigators should inspect the motorcycle for any defects that might explain why it ended up in oncoming traffic.
At this stage, too little is known to determine exactly what led to this wreck, but that’s why a thorough investigation is necessary. Looking beyond the immediate crash scene — examining road signage, visibility conditions and vehicle mechanics — will be key in providing the victim's family with some understanding how this crash happened.
