Romie Caver Injured in Truck Accident in Panola County, TX
Panola County, TX — November 7, 2024, Romie Caver was injured as the result of a semi-truck accident at around 10:00 p.m. along U.S. Highway 79.
Initial details about the accident say that it happened on the north end of Carthage near the intersection of U.S. 79 and North Jacobs Street/County Road 201.

It appears that 85-year-old Romie Caver was a passenger in a Toyota Rav4 traveling northeast on the highway. A Freightliner was traveling the same direction when the driver allegedly failed to control speed. As a result, the semi-0truck crashed into the Toyota.
Due to the accident, Romie Caver had reportedly serious injuries. There did not appear to be any other confirmed injuries. Right now, additional details about the accident are unavailable.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
Authorities seem to clearly be pointing to the truck driver involved in this crash making a mistake. Despite what many would think, that doesn't necessarily make a situation like this open-and-shut. Even if evidence confirms the truck driver made a mistake here, it's important to know why that mistake happened. Here's why that matters.
A thorough investigation should go beyond just the truck driver’s mistake and consider whether their employer’s actions or inaction played a role in the crash. Was the driver under pressure to meet an unrealistic deadline, leading them to speed or take unnecessary risks? Had they been driving too many hours, possibly fatigued due to a demanding schedule? Did the trucking company properly vet and train the driver, or did they overlook a history of reckless behavior? Beyond that, was the truck itself in safe working condition, or had the company neglected maintenance on critical systems like brakes and tires?
I've handled hundreds of commercial vehicle accidents, and these questions can often show there were preexisting issues which made a serious wreck all but inevitable. Holding a reckless driver accountable is obviously important, but failing to address the root cause only allows dangerous conditions to exist. That can lead to more people getting hurt or killed. So while the details here may seem straight-forward, there could still be a rather complex path forward to get the whole story.
