Commentary
People tend to jump to conclusions when it comes to single-vehicle accidents. They just assume the driver made a mistake. As common as that is, it's best to let the evidence speak for itself. There's no telling what extenuating circumstances may come up in more thorough investigations.
Did a tire blow out? Were there issues with the roadway? Did the victim experience a medical emergency? Did a vehicle defect occur? Did a faulty seatbelt or airbag result in otherwise avoidable serious injuries? Was there a reckless driver who left the scene? Were there issues with lighting or signage in the area?
Likely or not, I find that independent accident reconstructionists can reliably confirm or rule out these possible factors. Authorities, on the other hand, may see a crash like this as a low priority and move on without getting the whole story. Maybe they were more thorough here, but that's not something I'd ever take for granted.
