UPDATE (December 19, 2022): Sources have identified the victim of this accident as 35-year-old Sharene Moorehead.

Houston, TX — December 15, 2022, a female pedestrian was struck and killed by a vehicle on State Highway 6 in west Houston.

Authorities say the incident happened around 10:30 a.m. on Highway 6 near Richmond Avenue. Preliminary investigation suggests the victim was crossing eastward through the travel lanes of the highway when she was hit and fatally injured by a southbound Toyota Tundra.

The 22-year-old driver remained at the scene after the collision; police reportedly evaluated them for possible DWI and released them.

Often after an accident like this, people are quick to write it off as someone on foot in a place they shouldn't be. While pedestrians on a highway may be at risk, it's never right to jump to premature conclusions based only on a few rough details in preliminary reports. The whole context of any accident should be learned in case any unusual factors were involved.

I don't want to speculate on what did or didn't happen on Highway 6, but if investigating accidents for nearly 30 years has taught me anything it's that few if any of them are truly simple or straightforward. A woman lost her life here and that alone warrants as thorough an investigation as possible. Hopefully authorities will take that into account and bring the victim's loved ones some helpful answers.
