Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
The photos I've seen of this crash show a rather chaotic scene, and hopefully authorities were equipped not just to contain and clear the scene but also proper investigate it. I can't begin to count how many times families have come to me with unanswered questions because they waited for police to figure out what happened only to find out they had moved on weeks ago. Accident reconstruction just isn't that high of a priority for some police departments.
That's why there often needs to be independent investigators stepping in to actually preserve evidence and put the pieces together. In my experience, families who have professional accident reconstructionists working to tell the story fare better in the resolutions they can work toward. Given the serious nature of this particular crash, I doubt it would somehow be the exception to that.
