The driver involved allegedly was intoxicated at the time of the collision, authorities said. They said the driver has been charged with DWI. But is that really adequate for sending a young girl to the ICU to fight for her life? Hopefully authorities are taking more steps behind the scenes to really ensure there are appropriate consequences for this accident. It would surprise folks how often something even this serious can slip through the cracks.
I remember a case I had not long ago, for example, where authorities completely dropped the ball. A family was hit head-on by a drunk driver, and their young son was seriously injured. Authorities charged the driver and basically moved on. The family contacted us just to make sure they weren't missing anything. Well, authorities completely overlooked the bar that recklessly and illegally over-served the driver to a point of extreme intoxication. They, too, were legally on the hook for a kid nearly losing their life, but authorities didn't take any steps to see they were held accountable.
Evidence may show that authorities have been thorough here so the victim and her family can rest assured those who harmed them are answering for their actions. But I wouldn't count on that without knowing what and who is under investigation right now.
