Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When accidents like this occur, they often raise more questions than answers. As someone with decades of experience handling commercial vehicle accident cases, I’ve seen how these situations can have layers of contributing factors that need to be thoroughly examined to understand what happened.
What caused the first 18-wheeler to jackknife? Was it purely a result of the snowy and icy road conditions, or were there other contributing factors, such as excessive speed, improper braking techniques, or a lack of proper equipment like tire chains? Additionally, was the driver fatigued, distracted, or otherwise unable to maintain control of the truck? Understanding what led to the initial loss of control is critical to fully assessing the crash.
The role of the trucking companies involved also warrants careful scrutiny. Were the trucks properly maintained to handle winter weather? Were their drivers adequately trained and prepared for operating in icy conditions? Companies have a responsibility to ensure their vehicles are equipped for the environment in which they operate and that their drivers are capable of navigating such hazards. If there were lapses in maintenance, training, or safety protocols, those could have played a significant role in what occurred.
Ultimately, the goal is to uncover the truth and provide answers to those affected by the crash. Even if it requires conducting an independent investigation to obtain critical evidence, it’s essential to examine every factor to ensure those impacted by the incident receive the clarity and closure they deserve.
