Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
When I see reports of a crash like this, my first thought is that the families of those involved deserve clear answers about what happened. A fatal two-vehicle collision at an intersection raises serious questions, and in my experience, early reports often leave out key details that can make all the difference in understanding the full story. Before any conclusions can be drawn, three critical areas need further investigation.
First, did authorities conduct a thorough investigation? Intersection crashes can be complex, especially when the sequence of events isn’t immediately clear. Did investigators determine which vehicle had the right of way? Were traffic signals working properly, and were they clearly visible to both drivers? Did authorities check for any road hazards, such as poor lighting or obstructed signage, that may have contributed? A complete reconstruction of the crash scene is essential to ensure no critical details are overlooked.
Second, has anyone looked into whether a vehicle defect played a role? Modern vehicles are equipped with advanced safety systems, but those systems are not immune to failure. Did either vehicle experience a braking or steering malfunction that may have prevented a driver from avoiding the crash? Were airbags deployed properly, and did the vehicle’s crashworthiness systems perform as expected? In cases where a driver seems to have lost control or failed to stop in time, a forensic examination of the vehicles is necessary to rule out mechanical failure.
Finally, has all available electronic data been collected? Many vehicles, especially newer models, contain engine control modules (ECMs) that store critical data such as speed, braking and steering inputs leading up to a collision. Retrieving this data could clarify whether either driver attempted to stop or if a mechanical issue prevented them from doing so. Additionally, surveillance or traffic camera footage from nearby intersections could provide visual evidence of what happened. Phone records should also be reviewed to determine if distraction was a factor.
At the end of the day, a young life was lost, and another person was injured. The least the community owes those affected is a full and thorough investigation. If any of these three questions remain unanswered, there’s a real possibility that key details are being overlooked. Until we know exactly what happened and why, we simply don’t have the full story.
