These reports seem to be leaving out a lot of important information. Why was the semi-truck disabled? Was there a prior crash because it lost control? Was this a mechanical issue relating to poor maintenance? Was it just something unavoidable, like a tire blowout caused by road debris? How long was the truck in the road, and was the driver able to put out cones or flares?
Too often, I see crashes like this written off as unavoidable or the result of inattention. Sometimes, that's true. But there are other factors that need to be considered, and it's important to follow up with authorities to see if they investigated those possibilities. If they didn't, then there should be independent investigations that can help ensure those affected by the crash get the answers they deserve.
