Port Arthur, TX — December 5, 2022, Urfan and Kalsoom Khail were fatally injured in a traffic accident on South MLK Drive in Port Arthur.

Authorities say the incident happened just before 6:00 p.m. on the 1800 block of South MLK. Preliminary investigation suggests 30-year-old Urfan Khail was driving a Honda Accord when he allegedly failed to yield while turning onto MLK from a stop sign. As the car entered the road it was hit by a Ford F-150 pickup truck.

Urfan Khail was pronounced dead at the scene. His 27-year-old wife, Kalsoom Khail, died of her injuries at a hospital on Wednesday, November 7.

I don't have any particular reason to doubt what the news says happened here, but I've also seen preliminary reports miss important details often enough to wonder if there's more to the story. Failure to yield while turning was cited as the main reason for the crash, but did investigators look into anything else? What about road conditions? Vehicle malfunctions or defects? The pickup's speed? Anything else, inside or outside of the vehicles, that could have contributed to the crash?

I'm not suggesting I know things are more complicated than the narrative in reports, but I do know from long experience that sometimes if there's a "good enough" explanation that the investigation stops there and never really finds the truth.
