Victor Manuel Perez Killed in Work Accident in Sabine Pass, TX
Sabine Pass, TX — February 23, 2025, Victor Manuel Perez was killed due to a workplace accident at around 5:00 p.m. along South 1st Avenue.
Investigators said that the accident happened at 8010 1st Avenue.
It appears that 46-year-old Victor Manuel Perez was working on a spider basket lift at the time. During "relocation" of the basket, it somehow fell. This resulted in Victor Manuel Perez falling into the water. Victor Manuel Perez ultimately died in the accident.
While the cause of the accident has not been confirmed, OSHA listed four alleged violation citations and a recommended penalty. Further information is unavailable.

Obviously something went very wrong for a lift to fall like it reportedly did here, and it seems OSHA found things they believe are worth consequences. But even if that results in fines or administrative penalties, that doesn't automatically get the worker's loved ones the closure or resolution they deserve.
Simply put, Texas work fatality laws are more complex than in any other state in the country. There is not always a guarantee that families will receive benefits or see accountability after losing a loved one on the job. Even if OSHA finds violations, their focus is on their own administrative proceedings. They don't go out of their way to arm families with the evidence and the legal tools needed to work toward their own resolution that best meets their needs.
So as concerning as the initial OSHA reports on this accident are, they're likely just the tip of the iceberg. It wouldn't be surprising if independent investigations into what happened revealed a far more complex story that simple fines or citations wouldn't be enough to address on their own.
