Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
After any car accident, it's important that victims and families know all possible factors are getting proper attention. In my experience, it can be helpful to consider some key questions early on:
- Do authorities have well-equipped, well-trained officers with ample time looking at the facts, or is the crash a low priority?
- Have investigators inspected the vehicles for potential defects, either that caused the crash or caused a survivable crash to instead be fatal?
- Is all electronic data being preserved (cell phones, GPS, vehicle data, camera footage, etc.)?
These aren't the only questions that matter after an accident—not by a long shot. However, they can be a canary in the coal mine. If authorities can provide satisfactory answers, that's a good sign they're taking the investigations seriously. But if families ever feel authorities aren't providing clear answers, then that can be a sign that independent investigators need to step in so nothing important slips through the cracks.
