As straight-forward as these reports may seem, even if they're true, there's still an important question to answer: Why did the box van cross into oncoming traffic? A lot of people might just assume something common happened, like the driver being on their phone. That's certainly the first thing I'd check, but it would be far from the last.
Was the driver going at unsafe speeds? Did a tire blow out due to a lack of maintenance? Were they on the job and rushing to meet an unreasonable deadline? Are they a driver with a history of reckless behavior? Are they someone with too little training or experience operating larger vehicles? Were they impaired? Do they have some kind of medical condition? Has the van been inspected for potential vehicle defects?
Put simply, I've handled countless accidents across a more than 30 year career. Families generally don't want someone to blame. They want answers, and they want to see accountability. That doesn't mean getting the quick and easy explanation. That means ruling out or confirming as many contributing factors as possible, telling the whole story, and ensuring there are appropriate consequences for any and all wrongdoers—whether they were behind the wheel or behind the scenes. In my experience, that's what makes for a just resolution for a victim's loved ones.
