When I read about a crash like this, my first thought is that I hope investigators are able to determine exactly what happened. An 18-wheeler leaving the roadway and crashing raises serious concerns, and while it may seem like a straightforward incident, experience has shown that commercial truck crashes are often more complex than they initially appear. Before reaching any conclusions, it’s essential to ask three key questions.
First, did the authorities thoroughly investigate the crash? Law enforcement officers work hard to determine what happened, but their ability to conduct a comprehensive investigation depends on their training and resources. A full investigation should include accident reconstruction, an assessment of road conditions, and a review of any potential external factors, such as sudden evasive maneuvers, driver fatigue, or interactions with other vehicles. Given that this crash involved an 18-wheeler, agencies like the Department of Transportation or the National Transportation Safety Board may also be involved. However, even with specialized investigators, some contributing factors—such as mechanical failures—may not receive the attention they deserve.
Second, has anyone looked into the possibility that a vehicle defect caused the crash? Commercial trucks endure significant wear and tear, and mechanical failures—including brake malfunctions, steering system issues, or tire blowouts—can lead to a loss of control. Additionally, improperly loaded cargo can shift unexpectedly, causing a truck to veer off the roadway. Investigators should examine maintenance records, inspect the vehicle for signs of mechanical failure, and determine whether a defect played a role. Unfortunately, mechanical issues often go unnoticed unless someone actively looks for them, and once a crash occurs, the truck is often quickly removed from the scene before a thorough inspection can take place.
Lastly, has all the electronic data relating to the crash been collected? Most commercial trucks are equipped with an electronic control module (ECM) that records critical data such as speed, brake application, and steering input in the moments before impact. Additionally, GPS tracking data, dashcam footage (if available), and even cell phone records could provide valuable insight into what happened. If investigators don’t act quickly, this data could be lost or overwritten, making it much harder to get a complete understanding of the crash.
At the end of the day, those affected by this crash deserve clear and thorough answers about what happened. While it may seem like the truck simply left the roadway, that assumption doesn’t account for all possible contributing factors. A proper investigation that answers these three key questions ensures that no critical details are overlooked, providing much-needed clarity for the driver’s loved ones, the trucking company, and the community.
