Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
It's obviously a red flag that a truck driver apparently blew through a stop and careened onto the interstate. But more than knowing "what" happened, investigators need to find out why it happened. Maybe it was just a momentary lapse in judgement by the trucker. Maybe this is some one-in-a-million crash caused by a defect. In my experience, though, the root cause may lie behind the scenes with the truck driver's employer.
Was this driver working long hours? Were they rushing to meet an unreasonable deadline? Did they not have proper training, or were they inexperienced? Were they hired despite having a history of reckless driving? Did distraction due to work-related communications lead to the accident? Did the brakes give out due to poor maintenance?
These are all factors I've seen contribute to a serious truck wreck, yet they're also factors I often see authorities overlook. That's why it's important crashes like this get extra attention. There's a lot going on, and if it seems like authorities might be missing something, steps should be taken ASAP to pick up the slack. Otherwise, crucial details could slip through the cracks.
