UPDATE (July 14, 2023): Authorities have identified the three people killed in the bus accident. They were 34-year-old Juan Vasquez-Rodriguez, 71-year-old Buford Paya, and 47-year-old Bradley Donovan. Additional details about factors leading up to the crash remain under investigation at this time.
Madison County, IL — July 12, 2023, three people were killed and over a dozen were injured as the result of a Greyhound bus accident at around 1:55 a.m. along I-70.
Preliminary information about the crash has been released by the Illinois State Police. Their statements at this time say the crash involved multiple commercial vehicles, and it happened along westbound lanes of the interstate north of Highland in the area of the Silver Lake rest stop.

Right now, exact circumstances leading up to the crash are unclear. Authorities say that a Greyhound bus was going westbound and went onto the off-ramp toward the rest area. Doing so, the bus somehow crashed into multiple 18-wheelers reportedly parked "on the exit ramp". Photos show significant damage to the front end and right side of the bus.
Due to the crash, at least three people sustained fatal injuries. They have yet to be identified, but reports indicate all victims were from the bus. At least fourteen others had to be transported to the hospital, and four of those victims had to be airlifted from the scene. Current conditions are unclear.
No further information about the crash can be confirmed, and the cause remains under investigation.
