Derek Kelly Injured in Pedestrian Accident in Amarillo, TX
Amarillo, TX — October 21, 2023, Derek Kelly was injured following a vehicle versus pedestrian accident at around 2:30 a.m. on North Hughes Street.
Authorities said in preliminary statements that the collision happened at the intersection of North Hughes Street and West Amarillo Boulevard.

According to officials, 45-year-old Derek Kelly was was on foot and in the intersection. It's unclear right now if Kelly was crossing and, if so, which direction he was going. While in the roadway, authorities say Kelly was hit by a northbound vehicle. Details suggest that vehicle left the scene of the accident. Kelly was left with reportedly serious injuries.
If this was indeed a hit-and-run, were authorities ever able to get any details about the car? One would hope they'd check everything possible, including surrounding businesses or homes that may have had cameras. But it would surprise folks to know how often investigators miss what would seem to be obvious evidence.
Not long ago, for example, someone called our firm because they said someone ran a light and hit them, but that driver blamed the victim for running the light. The investigating officer basically just said there was no way to know who was telling the truth and moved on. But it didn't take us long to find a nearby business with a security camera that clearly showed the driver that hit our client was the one who ran the light. Either due to a lack of time, a lack of experience, or a lack of motivation, the officer just never bothered to walk across the street and have a look.
Hopefully authorities have been more thorough here, but there isn't much public information right now to say one way or the other.
