Gavin Everette Patrick Killed, Deacon Xavier Adkins, 1 Injured in Single-car Accident on Herring Ave. in Waco, TX
UPDATE (April 1, 2024): The person who lost his life as a result of this single-vehicle accident has been identified as a passenger, 31-year-old Gavin Everette Patrick, of Mexia. Another passenger reportedly injured has been identified as 19-year-old Deacon Xavier Adkins. Authorities mentioned the possibility of alcohol contributing to the crash, but it remains unconfirmed at this time. Just to be clear, investigations could very well conclude that alcohol was not a factor here. But even simply ruling out alcohol as a possibility can prove very challenging. Let me explain why.
Generally speaking, a lot of alcohol-related crashes involve negligent alcohol providers who illegally over-serve someone and contribute to the crash. Doing so can result in those establishments facing charges, liability, and fines and revoked licenses. Considering these consequences can get those establishments to clean up their act, a proper investigation would likely mean digging deeper than just the crash scene itself.
Unfortunately, authorities often put all of the focus on the drunk drivers, so those negligent alcohol providers may not answer for their recklessness if things are left entirely up to the authorities. Hopefully the recent details from officials is a sign they're being more prudent and working to get the victims and families here the answers they deserve.
