Sgt. Billy Randolph Killed in Alleged Intoxicated Driver Accident in Fort Worth, TX
Fort Worth, TX — August 12, 2024, Sgt. Billy Randolph was killed as the result of an alleged intoxicated driver accident at 5:30 a.m. along I-35W.
Investigators say that the incident happened during response to a prior crash on southbound lanes of I-35W near Sycamore School Road. The roadway was closed at Altamesa.

According to officials, Sgt. Billy Randolph was working the accident scene and was reportedly outside of his vehicle. While Sgt. Randolph was there, it appears an alleged intoxicated driver went through the crash scene, hitting Sgt. Randolph. As a result, Sgt. Randolph was killed. No other injuries were reported.
Commentary by Attorney Michael Grossman
The driver who allegedly hit Sgt. Bill Randolph was charged for intoxication manslaughter and collision involving death. If these allegations are true, it's another sad reminder that officers out on the highway trying to keep people safe are putting their lives on the line just by being there. While it has yet to be specified what the alleged intoxicant was, it would be no surprise if turned out to be alcohol.
Hopefully authorities are working to find out where this driver was prior to the accident. I've handled hundreds of cases against negligent alcohol providers who over-served a drunk driver, and it would not be the first time one contributed to an accident even at this time of day. Investigations may just rule out that possibility, but it wouldn't be right if someone who contributed to all of this was let off the hook just because no one bothered looking for them.
